Boat building in Bodrum

handcrafted like in ancient times, but the wooden boats of today are equipped with the most modern technology

Boat building in BODRUM

map of Bodrum peninsula

Imagine a small village on the shores of blue Aegean...
The main source of income is fishing, sponge diving and fruit farming...
Located on the shores of this village are the boat workshops with their primitive and traditional equipment...
That was Bodrum many moons ago.
In line with the rising economic trends and increasing popularity of Turkey, these shores have become the jewel of South Aegean.

As the demand increased, the boatyards adopted new techniques and brought new technologies and machinery, however though, their methods and traditions stayed the same.
For instance; when they start building a new boat, they sacrifice sheep and they do not work on Tuesdays as it is believed to be unlucky day. They cut trees at least 100 years old,but firstly they must get permission from the Forestry Ministry. They do not cut down the trees during full moon because of the excessive amount of water in the trees. It seems that, in the future, the ship building sector will improve even more. Much brighter days for shipyards are not too far away.

With the flock of tourists every year, locals redirected their businesses into serving tourism industry and boatbuilding is not far apart from this move.
In those quiet years, these small workshops used to build boats for fishermen and divers in the region.
Then, they started building Goulettes for famous Blue Voyage

Thousands of years ago wooden boats were made here for trade, war, fishing and sponge diving, and the design and structure reflects a maritime culture going back far into antiquity.
Exploring these shores by sea would take several weeks, so most people spread it over a number of years, nourishing mind and spirit with unforgettable memories.
One of the loveliest statches of coastline is that between Bodrum and Gokova, with its myriad of tiny bays, inlets and islands.

Torba, a modern village with holiday villas and a nice marina is located 8 km north of Bodrum. Gölköy and Türkbükü are small and simple fishing villages with a handful of taverns overlooking a lovely bay.
